Fredericksburg Regional Veterinary Emergency Center

Services

The FRVEC was set up to offer emergency and critical care services to patients during periods when the regular veterinarians are not available.  As such we are staffed and stocked in a manner to be able to handle most if not all emergency situations which arise.

Hospitalization:
At the present time the FRVEC is staffed at all times your family veterinarian is closed (i.e. 6PM to 8AM weekdays and 24 hours on weekends and/or holidays).  During any period the clinic is opened we have on duty the appropriate staff members to handle cases which require constant hospitalization therapies and monitoring.  There is a Veterinarian on-duty (in the hospital NOT on call) during all normal operating hours.

Diagnostics: Being an emergency and critical care facility the FRVEC must be prepared for any situation on a regular basis.  We have the capabilities to run complete in-house bloodwork (generally results are obtained within 1 hour), perform digital radiographics and basic ultrasound studies.  We are also able to run the "regular" diagnostics you are used to from your family veterinarian if necessary such as fecal exams, heartworm tests, feline leukemia/FIV tests and general cytology evaluations.  Having all of these tests at hand for in-house use allows the FRVEC clinicians to perform full work-ups hopefully obtaining information in a timely manner which allows for the appropriate therapies to be instituted and offer relief from the problems your pets are presenting for.

Surgery: The clinicians on staff at the FRVEC have been trained to effectively and appropriately manage the surgical cases they are presented with.  These include but are not limited to lacerations, gastric dilatation volvulus, cesarean sections, ovariohysterectomy due to pyometra and simple abscess care.  The FRVEC does not perform any orthopedic fixations at this time.  These procedures generally require a very specific set of instruments and expertise to "fix" the fractures of bones in a manner consistent with what Mother Nature had initially created.  Being an emergency and critical care facility our clinicians do not have the luxury of scheduling a block of time (often a couple of hours) when they will not be required to manage other cases and dedicate it to the repair.  Consequently, in efforts to offer the highest level of care to all of our patients as possible we will stabilize all patients with orthopedic injuries until they can be transported to a Veterinary Surgeon for repair.
